Radiologists Shortage versus Radiologist Salary

Posted on www.HealthImagingHub.com

The shortage of radiologists was recently recognized in several countries, for instance, the United States have been facing a significant shortage in radiologists since 2000, which made a large number of healthcare settings use telemedicine and remote radiology services to overcome this issue. Some hospitals even had to deal with teleradiology centers outside the United States in order to be able to complete interpretation and diagnosis of its radiology images. The current demand on radiologists and radiology technicians resulted in significant increase in radiology salaries, a diagnostic radiologist would have a salary ranging from $227,000 to $317,000 a year, Interventional radiologists on the other hand have higher salaries with a range of $286,500 to $401,000. It is also known that the highest radiology salaries are provided in Southern US while the lowest are on the Eastern regions of the country.

Wi-GO Helps Wheelchair Users Go Shopping

Wheelchair users should get mad props for tirelessly dealing with the tasks of life that go smoother with two feet. Despite milestones such as the Americans With Disabilities Act, there are some things that laws cannot easily fix. Take grocery shopping, for example. Such a straightforward task becomes a burdensome chore when one must deal with propelling both a wheelchair and a produce-filled shopping cart up and down the aisles of the local mega-mart.

The ACR and Society of Breast Imaging Statement on Radiation Received to the Thyroid from Mammography

The ACR and Society of Breast Imaging Statement on Radiation Received to the Thyroid from Mammography

April 4, 2011
Some Americans have expressed concern, due to an erroneous media report, that the small amount of radiation a patient receives from a mammogram may significantly increase the likelihood of developing thyroid cancer. This concern simply is not supported in scientific literature.
The radiation dose to the thyroid from a mammogram is extremely low. The thyroid is not exposed to the direct X-ray beam used to image the breast and receives only a tiny amount of scattered X-rays (less than 0.005 milligray). This is equivalent to only 30 minutes of natural background radiation received by all Americans from natural sources.

NeuroLogica BodyTom brings the CT to the patient ....

NeuroLogica, the company which already delivered a mobile head CT, has now received FDA approval for a portable, full body, multi slice CT scanner, the BodyTom. The BodyTom is a 32 slice CT with a 85cm gantry and 60cm field of view. It can be operated battery powered (up to 12 hours) or plugged into standard wall power outlets. The vision of the company is to bring the CT to the patient instead of vice versa, whether into the clinic, ICU, OR or emergency department. Apart from the increased portability, one of the most interesting new possibilities this brings is intraoperative CT, instead of the good old fluoroscopic imaging, without the need of an expensive dedicated CT-equipped operating room. The following comes from the intraoperative applications feature page:

Jan Medical's Sonar-based Brain Imaging System Might Rapidly Diagnose Ischemic Strokes

Currently, when patients display the symptoms of an ischemic stroke, they have to go to a hospital for brain imaging before a proper diagnosis can be made. Jan Medical, Inc. claims that its new portable brain imaging system, based on a very interesting technology, will solve this problem by allowing doctors to quickly diagnose strokes in patients in the office or in those who are en route in an ambulance. What's more is that the system can potentially be used for monitoring cerebral vasospasm in patients who suffered an intracranial bleed. The company also hopes that the system’s portability will allow for continuous monitoring of stroke patients so doctors can follow their recovery once they leave the hospital. The Mountain View, CA based company plans to present clinical trial data validating its system’s efficacy in detecting strokes later this week at the annual scientific meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR).

115-Year-Old Medical X-Ray Machine Comes Back to Life!!!!!

Watch the video here!!!

A team of physicists, engineers and radiologists recently revived a first-generation X-ray device that had been collecting dust in a Dutch warehouse. The antique machine still sparked and glowed like a prop in an old science fiction movie, and used thousands of times more radiation than its modern counterparts to make an image.

The old machine was originally built in 1896 by two scientists in Maastricht, the Netherlands, just weeks after German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen reported his discovery of X-rays — an achievement that won him the first-ever Nobel Prize in physics and sparked a rash of copycat experiments.

Osirix HD Now Available for iPad

Osirix is one of the finest radiological (DICOM) image viewers out there, and best of all it is free and open source. Now you can also enjoy that goodness on your iPad, with Osirix HD. A (paid) iPhone version has been out for a while, but of course the iPad screen lends itself much better for image viewing than the small iPhone screen. Osirix HD has been released just a few days ago as a universal app for iPhone and iPad, and costs $29.99. It can display images from all common imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, CT, MRI or PET scans. It can be used as a complement to the desktop version, providing seamless integration, or by itself connecting to a PACS server to retrieve images over WiFi or 3G. Basic image manipulation can be performed using the common iOS gestures. The main limitations are that images are limited to 1024x1024 pixels (bigger images are down-sampled) and the app is not FDA approved, so you are not supposed to use it for clinical diagnoses. The full feature list (from the press release):Display and browsing through large sets of images through an interactive slider
Zoom and Pan and rotation of the images through two-fingers drag and pinch
Contrast and intensity adjustment of image window and level through single finger drag
Rapid switch between image series through single finger screen "swipe"
Reset to image default size and setting through double tap
Measurement of object sizes using a line measurement tool that can be set and adjusted by two fingers
Measurement of image content data using a circular region of interest tool that can be drawn and moved with two fingers
DICOM compliant Listener (C-STORE SCP)
DICOM Query and Retrieve (C-FIND SCU, C-GET SCU, C-MOVE SCU, WADO)
JPEG2000/JPEG DICOM support
Preference setting for user DICOM communication settings
Access to desktop database through web-based portal for retrieving image data

Siemens Announces New Multix Select DR X-Ray System

Siemens Healthcare has unveiled its new Multix Select DR digital x-ray system at the European Congress of Radiology, which is currently underway in Vienna, Austria. Siemens highlighted the new system’s ease of use, and claims that it will cost significantly less than comparable systems which are currently on the market. The company has begun seeking regulatory approval for its new system, and hopes to begin an international rollout later this year.

From the press release:
The new, easy-to-use X-ray system enables physicians to acquire high-quality images rapidly. It is especially suited to clinics and practices which want to start working with digital radiography. The mobile flat detector with a size of 35x43 centimeters provides optimal coverage for all applications. The patient table with its floating tabletop and a bucky wall stand allow a flexible range of possible examinations and ensure that work sequences are accelerated. For example, synchronous movement of the X-ray tube assembly and the detector tray facilitates positioning. Having an established and proven imaging system and imaging workplace from Siemens’ higher-end digital X-ray systems by his side, the physician is able to look at the patient’s images within a few seconds. Additionally, he has access to software functions like DiamondView Plus for enhanced image contrast, which were so far only available in high-end Siemens X-ray products.

ContextVision Introduces MAMMO PlusViewCAD and GOPView iRVUltra

The European Congress of Radiology has started today in Vienna, so expect at least a few radiology-related announcements over the next few days. First is ContextVision, which is introducing two computer-aided detection software solutions: MAMMO PlusViewCAD and GOPView iRVUltra. MAMMO PlusViewCAD is a mammography viewing workstation with CAD functionality, which can be set up as a stand-alone system or integrated with a PACS system. It analyzes images and generates marks to highlight suspicious areas, such as microcalcification clusters and masses. The other product, GOPView iRVUltra, is a real-time image enhancement program for interventional radiology. A proprietary algorithm detects movement between images and corrects for them, allowing for lower-dose images without compromising on image quality.

Optima MR430s Extremity Scanner Gets FDA OK

GE Healthcare has received FDA regulatory approval for the Optima MR430s MR scanner. The 1.5 Tesla device will generally be used as an addition to a hospital's full size MRI machine because it can take on a good deal of the workload related to extremities. The small size and easy access may also provide a better option for people with claustrophobia when scanning extremities compared to a large bore MR.
Unlike the awkward and uncomfortable positions sometimes required for extremity scanning in whole-body systems, patients can relax in a padded chair beside the scanner, reclining comfortably much like they would in a favorite chair at home. Yet the Optima MR430s features a high-strength 1.5T magnet that ensures uncompromised image quality. And, because a more relaxed patient is less prone to moving around, the resulting images are likely to be even more clear and consistent...

The system has industry leading gradients, delivering 70mT/m of strength and 300T/m/s of slew rate. Short echo spacing and high signal to noise ratio enable high resolution and sharp images. The power of the system comes in a small footprint of approximately 222 square feet (20.62 square meters).
For technologists, the innovative design of the Optima MR430s helps improve productivity by alleviating time-consuming tasks, such as positioning patients and managing their anxiety. Six iso-centric dedicated RF coils can accommodate a full range of patient sizes and anatomies. The system’s design also ensures that the targeted anatomy is precisely positioned at the magnet’s isocenter and coil proximity increases signal to noise ratio for high clarity—even in small anatomies.
